The two main types of printers are Laser and Inkjets. Laser printers use a powder which is baked onto the paper these are more expensive to purchase but can be cheaper to run whereas ink jets as the name suggests use ink.

Both Laser and Ink Jet printers can be multi-function machines (print / copy / scan / fax) or printing only depending on your preferences. Ink Jet machines are all colour machines whereas laser printers can be black or colour.

The best printer for you will depend on how much you print and what tasks you are performing. If you do not need colour printing then definitely consider a mono laser printer – as an example a small multi-function machine that uses a 1000 page cartridge costs around $175 and compatible cartridges cost around $48.00. Generally, a home user’s best option is a multi-function ink jet because of its price and functionality.

Inkjet printers are the best home office choice. Typically, these machines are very cheap to buy with quite good quality, they start from about $35.00 and go to about $115.00. However, there are only two cartridges – one of these has all three colours in it so once all of one colour runs out you need to replace the cartridge even if the other colours are still near full. In the home user area there are two types of inkjet printers. One where the print head is in the machine or in the cartridges.

The second type of inkjet printer is a multi-cartridge type machine where the print head is part of the machine. This is a more expensive type of machine starting around $80.00 and going up to $400.00 depending on the features and size of cartridges. This is a better quality machine. The positives are that you only replace the cartridges as you use them and the quality of print is better. Additionally, compatible cartridges or refills are usually available for these machines and give fewer problems. The drawback is the more expensive initial cost and that some of these machines have six individual cartridges.
